Mental Health First Aid Course - Supporting Youth (YMHFA)
Learn how to assist young people who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.
The course covers the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems, how to provide initial help, what professional help is available, effective help options (as shown by research) and first aid for a mental health crisis situations. It provides the knowledge and skills needed to feel confident to help.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is for adults working or living with young people (aged 12 to 18).

Course Prerequisites: There are no pre requisites required to do this course it is open to all adults (18 and over)
USI: You do not need a USI to take this course

Who is this Course For:
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is for adults working or living with adolescents. So this course is particularly suitable for parents, school staff, sports coaches, and youth workers.
The information and statistics included are about adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years, however, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older.

Course Outcomes:
- Certificate of Completion
- Option to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider (there is no extra cost for this)
Course Delivery:
Duration: 2 days (may be consecutive or non-consecutive)
Location: Assist First Aid training centre. Group or onsite booking for school or community groups are also available - contact us.

Course Assessment:
- Optional online assessment to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider. This is optional and there is no extra cost for this.
- Mental Health First Aider accreditation is valid for three years.
Course Content:
- Signs and symptoms of common mental health problems
- How to help to someone who maybe experiencing a mental health problem or crisis
- An evidence-based Action Plan
- Responding in a crisis situation
- Participants have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment
- Mental health problems covered: depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis and substance use
- Mental health crises covered: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drugs use and aggressive behaviours
