The Mental Health First Aid for or the Tertiary Students course teaches how to assist a fellow student developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

This course covers the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems‚ how to provide help‚ what professional help is available, effective help options (as shown by research) and first aid for mental health crisis situations. It provides the knowledge and skills needed to feel confident to help.


This is a Blended course and includes self-paced eLearning followed by an in person workshop.
 

Course Requirements:

Course Prerequisites: 
  • That you are a University or Tafe student (evidence of this will be required).
  • You must complete the eLearning before the in person workshop.

Who is this Course For:

This course is suitable for tertiary students. It includes information and example scenarios relevant to students however the information and techniques can be applied to all adults, in all situations.

This is an evidence based course developed by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation focused on mental health training and research. Find out more about the Mental Health First Aid course here.

 

Course Outcomes:

  • Certificate of completion of Mental Health First Aid training
  • Course participants may undertake an optional online assessment to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider (there is no extra cost for this)

Course Delivery:

About this course:
  • There are two parts to this course; Self paced eLearning (5-7 hours) and a 4hour person workshop. 
  • You must complete both parts to become accredited.
  • You must complete the eLearning prior to the the workshop.

Course inclusions:
  • Self paced eLearning (5-7 hours)
    • Once you have enrolled and paid for your course, you will be emailed course information.
    • A link and voucher to redeem for your eLearning will be emailed to you 2 weeks before your Face to Face workshop.
    • The e-Learning must be completed before the workshop.
  • Face to Face workshop session (4 hours)
    • This is a practical workshop focused on applying of knowledge and skills learnt in the eLearning. In the workshop we will:
      • Examine issues relevant to student mental health problems in more depth.
      • Clarify any questions you have from the eLearning.
      • Apply the MHFA Action Plan to scenarios.
      • Discuss 'where to from now' in using mental health first aid skills
    • Proof that you are a student and have completed the eLearning will be required.
  • Mental Health First Aid manual
    • You will also receive a current, printed current MHFA manual. You can pick this up from the Assist First Aid office in Buddina after enroling (or when you attend your workshop.
    • You will have access to an Online MHFA manual while you complete your eLearning.
Other Information:

Course Assessment:

  • People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete an optional online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider (there is no additional cost for this).
  • Mental Health First Aider accreditation is valid for three years.

Course Content:

  • Recognising common mental health problems
  • Providing initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • An evidence-based Action Plan
  • Responding in a crisis situation
  • Participants have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment
  • Mental health problems covered: depression, anxiety problems, psychosis, substance use problems
  • Mental health crises covered: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drugs use, aggressive behaviours
