Tertiary Student Mental Health First Aid Course - Blended Learning; eLearning & Face to Face Workshop

The Mental Health First Aid for the Tertiary Students blended course teaches how to assist a fellow student developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

This course covers the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems‚ how to provide help‚ what professional help is available, effective help options (as shown by research) and first aid for mental health crisis situations. It provides the knowledge and skills needed to feel confident to help.


This is a Blended course and includes self-paced eLearning followed by a Face to Face workshop. 


 

Course Requirements:

Course Prerequisites: 
  • That you are a University or Tafe student (evidence of this will be required).
  • You must have completed the online e-learning before this Face to Face workshop.

Who is this Course For:

This course is suitable for the tertiary students. It includes information and example scenarios relevant to students however the information and techniques can be applied to all adults, in all situations.

This is a research based course developed by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation focused on mental health training and research. Find out more about the Mental Health First Aid course here.

 

Course Outcomes:

  • Certificate of completion of Mental Health First Aid training
  • Course participants may undertake an optional online assessment to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider (there is no extra cost for this)

Course Delivery:

There are 2 components to the Tertiary Blended MHFA course:
  • Component 1: Self paced e-Learning (5-7 hours). This must be completed prior to Component 2.
  • Component 2: 4hour Face to Face workshop.
  • You are currently enrolling in Component 1 & 2. If you would like to enrol in Component 1 only please enrol on this page.

Enroling on the page includes both Components 1 & 2 and your MHFA manual;
  • Component 1: Self paced e-Learning (5-7 hours)
    • Once you have enrolled and paid for your course, you will be emailed the link and voucher to redeem for your eLearning.
    • The e-Learning must be completed before the Face to Face session (so please leave yourself enough time).
 
  • Component 2: Face to Face workshop session (4 hours)
    • This is a practical workshop focused on applying of knowledge and skills learnt in the eLearning. You will have the opportunity to:
      • Examine issues relevant to student mental health problems in more depth.
      • Clarify any questions you have from the eLearning.
      • Apply the MHFA Action Plan to scenarios.
      • Discuss 'where to from now' in using mental health first aid skills
    • Proof of having completed the eLearning will be required.
 
  • Mental Health First Aid manual
    • You will have access to an Online MHFA manual while you complete your eLearning. You will also receive a current, printed current MHFA manual. You can pick this up from the Assist First Aid office in Buddina after enroling.
    • Your MHFA manual should be brought to your Face to Face workshop.
 
  • Mental Health First Aider accreditation
    • Once you have completed both the eLearning and the workshops you will be able to take a short online exam to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider.
    • There is no additional cost for this.
    • You must complete both components to complete the course / become a Mental Health First Aider.

Course Assessment:

  • People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete an optional online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider (there is no additional cost for this).
  • Mental Health First Aider accreditation is valid for three years.

Course Content:

  • Recognising common mental health problems
  • Providing initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • An evidence-based Action Plan
  • Responding in a crisis situation
  • Participants have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment
  • Mental health problems covered: depression, anxiety problems, psychosis, substance use problems
  • Mental health crises covered: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drugs use, aggressive behaviours
