Mental Health First Aid Course

Assist First Aid believe mental health is just as important as physical health and offer the Mental Health First Aid Australia, Mental Health First Aid course to support complete first aid, health and safety knowledge.

Around 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Understanding how to talk about mental health and help someone in need are important skills. Yet, many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a conversation with someone they are concerned about.

At a Mental Health First Aid course, you will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems and crises. You’ll learn how to provide initial help where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

The Mental Health First Aid course covers the most common developing mental problems and crisis situations including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis and Severe psychotic states
  • Bipolar
  • Substance Use Problems and the effects of drug and alcohol abuse
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)
  • Aggressive behaviours

Mental Health First Aid Courses are available for individuals on the Sunshine Coast in our Buddina Training centre (Click here for course dates).

For groups and workplaces onsite and offsite training is also available.

Mental Health First Aid Training for Workplaces

More and more workplaces are realising the impact of mental health problems at work on their people and productivity. Encouraging early help- seeking is one way to promote a mentally healthy workplace. This is where Mental Health First Aid can help.

Mental health first aid is an evidence-based training course which gives your employees the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers and help guide them to professional help if needed. It has been shown to increase knowledge, confidence and helping behaviours, and reduce stigma.

People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete an online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider. Just like appointing physical first aid officers, many organisations choose to appoint accredited Mental Health First Aiders within the workplace.

Workplaces can become part of the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Skilled Workplace Program that recognises workplaces for their commitment to Mental Health First Aid training. Participating in the MHFA Skilled Workplace Program is a clear demonstration of your commitment to building a mentally healthy workplace, both to your staff and your external stakeholders.
