Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

Are you interested in learning how to support adolescents who may be struggling with mental health issues?

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to identify, intervene early and to provide support to adolescents (aged 12 to 18) who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing worsening of a mental health. You’ll also learn how to respond appropriately in crisis situations.

Adolescence is a critical time for development, and mental health problems can have lasting impacts on a person’s life. About 1 in 4 young Australians experience a common mental illness each year.

Youth MHFA can help. With this training, you’ll gain a better understanding of common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts and behaviours. You’ll also learn how to reduce stigma and increase support for young people with mental health problems.

Learn Practical First Aid Skills:

  • Signs and symptoms of common mental health problems
  • How to help to someone who maybe experiencing a mental health problem using an evidence-based Action Plan
  • Responding in a crisis situation
  • Practice new skills in a safe environment

This is an educational course, not a therapy or support group.

The course is designed for anyone who works, lives with, or cares for adolescents, including teachers, parents, youth workers, coaches, and community group leaders. Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, you’ll learn how to support young people until they receive appropriate professional help or the crisis resolves.

Mental health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Eating disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use

Mental health crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours
